I think each individual person's play style will dictate which one of them is 'better'. That being said, I'm looking forward to the Paragon far more than the Dervish. I've already got a couple of builds planned out just from the short time I spent using one in the pvp event.

I like the Paragon better. Their high armor and great support skills are nice, but more than anything...they chuck spears.
The Dervish reminds me of the Grim Reaper...hooded - scythes.
They also seem gimmicky to me.
Eventually, I'll play both, but the Paragon excites the Dervish...not so much.

I'm going to make 1 of each and play them out a bit. Once I have a firm grasp of what each one is capable, I'll pick 1 to roll with, then come back to the other.
I've always liked playing support characters over melee characters, so I'm leaning towards the paragon first. Won't know which one I really like more until October.

I like how people are calling the Dervish a gimmick class when they are based on an actual culture.

I guess it depends on what you want to do...
I dont see myself using a scythe secondary- it attacks too slow, and most of the dervish skills are enchantments... meaning you miss out on the mysticism bonus if its your secondary.
Paragon as a secondary seems much more versatile... aside from just critical spear and ranger spear...
It depends on the final balancing... on the preview weekend Id definately say the dervishes had the upper hand....
But then again too, Im looking forward to Mesmerizing any derbish I see in the arenas this weekend...
That new necromancer Signet of Suffering will help that.
EDIT->
I forgot to say which one i prefer...
Dervish. You can find a good rthmy and not even have to pay attention to the fight. Pious Strike ftw, personally.
However, I feel the Paragon is more of an acheivement as far as getting an uber character built out... so I am looking forward to playing the Paragon more.. both as primary and secondary.

My favourite is the dervish. Its the kind of melee/spellcaster combo i've been waiting for. However, I will also be using a paragon since I enjoy the support role.

Dervishes are going to *so* be the Assassins of Nightfall. I can just see the newbies spamming "I'm using Avatar of X!" and running around in Avatar form now.
Give any class a big flashy ability like that and the kiddies have to flock to it.
Peace,
-CxE

Guess I'm the only one without a character slot. They won't give us an extra slot for the weekend will they?
My only option to try out this weekend is delete my mesmer D;

Dervish, while fun, is something every noob and their mom is going to play. I hate to play what everyone else is playing though. I've already unlocked all the elite skills, runes to superior, and several weapon mods for Dervish though. Paragon requires a lot of multitasking, which means that people that play them will generally be the non-noobs. Everyone says Dervish is the new Wammo, but Wammo isn't even a bad combination in the right hands.
Personally, I'm concerned about Dervish's ability to gain HP/Energy with enchant removal. They do comparable damage to a Sin, gain Hp/Energy back like crazy, have AoE Enchants, and their defense isn't based around running away. For a sin, if you stay to attack a target you are dead, plain and simple. They need to give sin the same loving that Dervish obviously got.
When Nightfall comes out I will more than likely play my Warrior through the first time, just because he was the first charecter I made on prophecies a year ago. Dervish and Paragon sound fun, but I'd rather let the noobs get through with them before I give em a go again. It was a bit sick to see full Dervish teams in pvp as well....

Dervish just looks like a fun class. I don't know how practical it's going to be for serious PvP (as their avatar powers have such long cooldowns)
Paragon, on the other hand, is probably going to be included in every HoH build from this point forward. Will it be fun to play in PvE though? I'm hoping so, because in case you haven't guessed, this is the guy I'll be making
I'm probably just going to stick with my assassin as far as melee classes go. I don't like being spread thin.

Dervish might come out as overpowered at first and probably very easy to play too with all their powerful spam skills. Paragons on the other hand seem to be the choice for players seeking something different in a profession, not just another high damage, easy to use profession. I'd go paragon on condition that the rest of their armour looks a hundred times better than the armour we've seen...

Dervish = PvE
Paragon = PvP
Already stated many times, but whatever. And that's only from what I've experienced playing both profs thus far. For all I know there could be brilliant Paragon builds out there that are well suited for PvE play.
If I had to pick one in general, I'd say Dervish, but I LOVE the Paragon armor.
